Accessibility
We want this website to be usable by everyone. Here is what we have built in, and how to tell us when we can do better.
Your device's settings
There is no separate accessibility widget on this site. The settings on your phone, tablet or computer reach every page directly, so you set them once and they work everywhere, not only here.
- Larger text: use your browser's zoom (the aA menu in Safari on iPhone, the zoom control or Ctrl/Cmd and + on a computer) or the text-size setting in Chrome on Android. Every size on this site scales with it.
- Higher contrast: turn on "Increase contrast" or a high-contrast theme on your device. Text and links on this site are already set for strong contrast against their backgrounds.
- Less motion: turn on "Reduce motion" and this site's smooth scrolling turns off automatically, there is very little animation here to begin with.
What we have built into the site
We have aimed this website at the principles of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We do not hold a formal accessibility certification or audit, but we have designed and tested toward these goals:
- If your device asks for reduced motion, the site honours it automatically.
- Text colours are chosen for contrast against their backgrounds.
- The layout adapts to phones, tablets and desktops, so nothing is cut off or trapped off-screen.
- Meaningful photographs carry alternative text; decorative images are marked so they do not add noise.
- Proper headings and page landmarks so screen readers can move through content in a sensible order.
- A skip link, a logical tab order and visible focus states, so the site can be used without a mouse.
This site carries very little movement by design, so there is nothing that animates into view or hides itself behind a transition.
